What is the Cthulhu look?

A whole horror genre of Art Deco and tentacles began in February 1928 when the pulp magazine Weird Tales published “The Call of Cthulhu,” a short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft.

The story begins with discovery of notes and a small sculpture of a scaly creature which yields “simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature.” As the investigation into the mystery unfolds, the characters become deeper and deeper embroiled in the inevitable madness that results from learning the horrific truth; the world belongs to the “Great Old Ones” whom are worshipped by cultists who await the awakening and destructive power of Cthulhu.

All costuming (that complies with public decency laws) is welcomed at the Cincinnati Halloween Masquerade, it’s a party and primarily a night of fun, but if you do wish to dress to the theme, there are several directions in which you can take this.

While Cthulhu stories have expanded to be set in other time periods, the primary look of the Cthulhu universe is that of the 1920’s and 30’s. It is a world filled with hardboiled detectives, college professors, flappers and dilettantes, newspaper reporters, gangsters, magicians, and other archetypes of the Jazz Era all united in their opposition to the cultists who would summon destruction and madness.

Despite all these cool detectives pulling their trusted 9mm on tentacle demons, please note that prop weapons are not permitted at the Cincinnati Halloween Masquerade.

The Cultists of Cthulhu have discovered the dark truth of the universe and believe that doom and destruction is the inevitable future that awaits us all. Pooling from all walks of life, the cultists operate in secret societies to bring about the return of Cthulhu and the other Ancient Ones, seeking no reward other than to be amongst the first destroyed and thus spared from the agony that awaits humankind.

Great Old Ones

If you want to get REALLY elaborate with your costume, then you might consider making an appearance as one of the Great Old Ones; this will probably involve tentacles of some kind.
