Upcoming Steampunk Community Service Events

This month, the steampunk group Her Royal Airship Ashanti will participate in two community service events in the Greater Cincinnati area.

First up, the crew hits the track at Woodward Career Technical High School for Relay for Life of the Soul, the only relay geared specifically toward the African-American community. (According to the American Cancer Society, African-Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic group in the US for most cancers.)

Airship Ashanti is also sponsoring a blood drive with Hoxworth Blood Center from June 15 to June 20. During this time, Crew members will appear at several locations to give blood, hand out fliers and distribute snacks to people who donate.

“These events are important to Ashanti because they allow us to give back to the local community while sharing our passion for steampunk,” says Mandisa Njeri, Airship Ashanti’s captain. “By hosting and getting involved in philanthropic events, it allows us to leverage our talents and show off our garb to bring attention to worthwhile causes.”

If you’re interested in participating, please visit the Airship Ashanti community page on Facebook for more information.

Ofeibea Loveless, co-founder of the Midwest Black Speculative Fiction Alliance, is a writer/editor who focuses on multicultural aspects of steampunk.
