The Girl with All the Gifts

First it was a short story. Then it grew to fill a novel. Soon, it will be a major motion picture. The Girl with All the Gifts, by M.R. Carey, is set in a zombie-plagued dystopia where scientists seek to use infected children to develop a cure. The book was released in 2014, and it says a lot that the first trailer for the film has already dropped, a mere two years later. Fortunately, the original author is also listed as the screenwriter, which hopefully means that even though the story must be adapted to a new medium, it will preserve the spirit of its original story.

So far, the film is only set to release in the UK. However, even if it is not released in theaters internationally, it will definitely be available for purchase online sometime in the next few months. Thank god for the internet.

It’s definitely a fresh take on the old zombie trope, and with such a stellar cast, the trailer is all but bursting with potential. The image of Melanie wearing a clear mask like Hannibal Lector is a powerful, jarring image. The blood running down her face and over her shirt only emphasizes the horror of the scene. If the rest of the film is anything like the teaser, we’re in for quite a wild ride.

What do you think? Will you be waiting for The Girl with All the Gifts?
