The B-52s in Outer Space!

Ever since their first single, “Rock Lobster” in 1978, American new wave band The B-52’s has always been very much out there, but in 1992 they took a trip to Outer Space with the song “Is That You Mo-Dean?”

B52s MoDean

The song was the second single from their album Good Stuff. All the band members played a part in writing it as the main line originates from a stage chant the band would play in their early days.

“Is That You Mo-Dean?” tells the tale of Mo-Dean who was abducted by a UFO, but has returned to Earth 987 years later. In true B-52’s camp fashion the band become clad in silver “quasi futuristic” space suits that look like something out of The Jetsons. The music video appears to have had less of a budget than Plan 9 From Outer Space, but it is exactly the right look for the band and their B-movie vibe.

Despite the success of the previous single “Good Stuff“, the song failed to chart in the USA. It nevertheless became one of the most popular tracks from Good Stuff and a live favorite for many years. The single edit of the song was included on the band’s greatest hits compilation Time Capsule: Songs for a Future Generation. The music video for the song was featured on The B-52s’ music video collection The B-52’s Time Capsule: Videos for a Future Generation 1979-1998.
