Navigation – How to Find Your Way Around the World

Presented by Mark Gist

Presenting navigational instruments and theory from the 13th century through the end of the 19th century for ships, land, and airships. This includes working examples of most of the instruments.

The presentations is divided into four parts. The first is on dead reckoning navigation, the second is on instruments such as the sextant that are used to check position, the third is on variations used by airships, and the final part is how this applies to explorers on land.


Mark Gist has been giving presentations on navigation for more than 20 years on the Columbus Santa Maria, pirate festivals, and steampunk conventions.
