The Duchess’ Costume Contest

“It was the White Rabbit returning, splendidly dressed, with a pair of white kid gloves in one hand and a large fan in the other: he came trotting along in a great hurry, muttering to himself as he came, ‘Oh! the Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! Won’t she be savage if I’ve kept her waiting!’”

Are you splendidly dressed and ready to show off? Well, don’t keep us waiting! Take part in the Duchess’ Costume Contest. There are three things she enjoys: pigs, pepper, and fashion! Steampunks are known for their amazing costumes and creative designs. Show your ingenuity, creativity, and love of Alice in Wonderland this year at our annual costume contest. Prizes will be awarded for:

  • Best Gentlemen’s Costume,
  • Best Lady’s Costume,
  • Best Boy’s Costume,
  • Best Girl’s Costume,
  • BestCouple/Group Costume
  • Best Alice in Wonderland Themed Costume.

Winners will be decided by the judges, all whom are experts in tailoring or costume-making. Just don’t be late or you’ll miss your opportunity!

ISS2015 MadhatterAnyone is welcome to participate in the contest, whether associated with an airship or not. HOWEVER, if you are not part of an airship, one of the competing airships may try and convince you to join afterwards, and therefore earn your points. This year only one set of points will be available per competition. If the winners are not part of an airship or not convinced to join one, the points go unawarded to any airship. Airships will have until 3:30pm on Sunday at the convention to claim an unaffiliated winner. The winner must announce his decision to join an airship, in person, to the Symposium Games’ MC (Peter B. Slayer) before that time.

Costume Contest Rules:

  • Contestants may participate in more than one category (Best Girl’s Costume and Best Alice in Wonderland Themed Costume or Best Lady’s Costume and Best Couple/Group Costume, for example). Judging is separate for each category. Each category will be called up one at a time.
  • To partake in the Alice in Wonderland Themed contest, your costume must be clearly related to Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass in some form, but does not have to be a particular character.
  • Children’s categories (Best Boy’s and Girl’s) are open to anyone aged 13 and under. Ages 14 and above compete in the adult categories (Best Gentleman’s and Lady’s).
  • Costumes do not have to be made by you, but the judges will consider creativity in their decisions, so be original and fabulous!
  • Accessories of any kind are permitted, provided they are not dangerous for the audience or contestant.
  • Any outfit is acceptable, but please keep in mind that there may be children in the audience, so no nudity is permitted.
  • Contestants should prepare a short introduction for themselves and their costume. Children should have a parent/guardian present to introduce them, if they are not comfortable talking on their own.
  • Contestants must be willing to be photographed during and after the event by a Symposium photographer.
