International Steampunk Symposium Author Program

The Steampunk Community is overbrimming with creative and innovative people. Prominent in this array of talent are our writers, dreaming up new worlds and fantastical characters, and in the D.I.Y. spirit of Steampunk many of them are self-published or with indie press companies. To show our support of Small Press, Independent, and Traditionally Published authors, the International Steampunk Symposium has developed an Author Program in which one can sell your books risk free in the Symposium Bookstore.


Have you ever noticed many indie press authors sitting behind a table in a vendor hall looking like puppies waiting to be adopted from the kill-shelter? Writers are very talented people, but more often than not a writer’s personality does not make for a good sales person, and even when they are, there is a certain awkwardness about the attendee wanting to peruse the book without the author being right there staring hopefully at them. This is why for 2015 we are introducing the option of having your books in our bookstore for the weekend.

Part of the Symposium’s vendor hall will be run by Pandora Society staff with display shelves for books which attendees can peruse in the same manner one might at any bookstore. Our staff will take care of the sales, and at the end of the weekend writers whose books sold will receive a PayPal payment, and any unsold books will just leave with the writer. The arrangement is risk free for the author, all you need is a 2015 International Steampunk Symposium badge and willingness to allow our bookstore 20% of sales in exchange for doing the work . . . a huge amount cheaper than buying your own table, AND you won’t be stuck behind a table for the whole convention.

There will be several panels on the art of writing and a reception for all the writers who have signed up for this program; great opportunities to network and learn more about your craft. Also, writers in this program will have scheduled times at the signing table at the bookstore. Plus, we encourage writers to join the writing related panels and workshops as Speakers . . . a great opportunity to plug your book in the bookstore 🙂


The mechanics of the bookstore are simple. On Friday, April 24th, 2015 you drop off copies of your books that you wish to sell and receive a receipt for the number of books deposited. Come Sunday, April 26th, 2015 at the close of the show, you pick up all remaining books, and your sales minus the 20% commission will be listed on a statement and payment will be sent to your PayPal account within 24 hours.
