Houdini’s death, and the Halloween Seance tradition

Born as Erik Weisz, world famous escape artist, illusionist, stunt performer Harry Houdini died on October 31st in 1926. He toured the United States , Europe and the world. Houdini was a most brilliant self promoter, and in what we would also call today as marketing. He was the man that could escape anything. Many expected, yes, even the realm of death and spirit.

He had always an interest in the occult and spirits, as its natural for illusionists to be curious on matters of the metaphysical and real magic. In addition, this interest was fueled by a tragic death of his mother, who was very near and dear to him.

For many years he sought some kind of proof of spiritual communication, but he tended to attract frauds, whom he debunked , as charlatans preying on the weak.

But make it clear, even as a skeptic, he wanted to believe.

Medical reports cite his cause  of death as being a ruptured appendix, and witnesses attest various versions of someone challenging his strength, and kidney punching him.

seanceOn his deathbed, he made a promise and a code to attempt to communicate with his wife Bess. For then years she led a Halloween Houdini Seance.Could death hold him? After ten years and no results, she couldn’t take it anymore and called it quits. The last “official” was in 1936. It was held on the roof of the Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel on Ivar Street. However, many magician(illusionist) groups, as well as spiritual mediums , and even simply fans of Houdini still attempted for years, even to this day.

The keyword of the message by the way, was “B-E-L-I-E-V-E”
