How to Destroy the World

Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. –Robert Frost Suppose you’re […]

Book Review- The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi

I was drawn to this book by its cover, which gave off a sort of Steampunkish, old-meets-new vibe but was clearly not set in jolly ol’ England. It turned out not to be Steampunk at all, but was an incredibly interesting world unlike any other I have ever encountered. Somewhere in our near future, the […]

Adaptation is the Name of the Game

There are diverse reasons why a movie grabs the attention of an audience or why it sputters in the theaters. Each movie endeavor is a complex mix of story ideas, casting, narrative, writing, cinematography, musical score, advertising, and other intangibles. If one element does not work, the success of the entire movie is at risk. Is it any wonder that studios look to produce movies with a built-in fan base? This is why studios are more likely to fund remakes or sequels—and why they search out best-selling novels, popular comic series, and MMO, RPG, and FPS games to adapt. * Yet movies developed from games tend to provide mixed results among fans. As if responding the turmoil caused by the Twitterverse’s accusations of Joss Whedon betraying Black Widow as a strong female character in the Action Movie genre, along came Furiosa (Charlize Theron) like a valkyrie of feminist justice! Not only was Mad Max – Fury Road the most refreshing action movie to have burst on the screen in decades, […]
