Birth of the Famous Tarot Deck Creator

waite__1910Arthur Edward Waite is best known as a student and practitioner of the occult and member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Masonic Orders, and founder of Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, surviving in a similar group today as Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis. This weekend marked his birthdate of October 2nd, 1857 in Brooklyn New York.

He acted as one its historians of the occult as well, by writing works such as The Mysteries of Magic: A digest of the writings of Eliphas Levi, 1886 ; The Real History of the Rosicrucians, 1887; The Occult Sciences: A Compendium of Transcendental Doctrine and Experiment, 1891; The Hermetic Museum, 1893, The Alchemical writings of Edward Kelly, 1893; and The Book of Black Magic and Pacts 1893, later retitled the Book of Cermonial Magic which was an attempt to combine together the works of many previous grimoires into one text. Grimoires, is similar to the term grammar, in that the thought of a mispronounced, missed, skipped, or misused word of language would severely and catastrophically affect a magical operation.

Contemporaries included rival Aleister Crowley, who had the equivalent of literary ‘rap battles’ against each other, Paul Foster Case founder of Builders of the Adytum (who happens to have his birthday on October 3rd), and of course Pamela Nicole Smith.

A.E. Waite is also notably known for authoring the world’s most well known and used Tarot deck, illustrated by Pamela Nicole Smith, originally published by Rider, known as the Rider Waite Smith Tarot Deck.

Many of his works can be found for legal free public reading here below, courtesy of Sacred Texts
