Around the World in 48 Hours

The theme for the International Steampunk Symposium is “Around the World in 80 Days,” but this April the Airships and Steampunk Groups competing in the Symposium Games will attempt to circumnavigate the globe in less than 48 hours.

During Opening Ceremonies (scheduled for 7PM on Friday, April 24th, 2015) each of the competing teams will be introduced when their captains come up on to the main stage, and the challenge will be issued for each Airship to break the record set by Phileas Fogg in 1870’s as documented by Jules Verne. The various contests of the Symposium Games and other challenges met will earn the Airships points which will determine their position in the race around the world, and we shall keep track of their progress on our global map in the Symposium Games Arena.

More details will be released as we draw closer to April, but for your planning purposes please know that the following are our key target destinations for programming, entertainment, and special events as we work our way around the world and through the weekend.

Friday, April 24th, 2015

7PM – Britain, for Opening Ceremonies and the launch of the racing Airships.

8PM – France, and other European countries . . .

11PM – Northern Africa; some will be in Cairo, while others might be in Casablanca.

Saturday, April 25th, 2015

MORNING – Depending on the route taken by the particular Airship, some will pass through African countries, other will pass Eastern Europe and Russia, but the plan is to rendez-vous for a spot of lunch.

NOON – India, a great place for a cup of tea and other cultural delights.

AFTERNOON – The race is back on, over Thailand, China, and Hong Kong, but some might find themselves in Australia or New Zealand.

EVENING – Again a plan to all meet up in Japan for the Symposium Ball.

Sunday, April 26th, 2015

MORNING – We shall wake up in San Francisco and make our way east through the Wild West. Some may end up in South America, but hopefully we’ll all get together again in time for lunch.

NOON – We shall dine in New York before bidding the Americas a farewell to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

AFTERNOON – “There be monsters,” we warn our crews of tales and legends of the lost city of Atlantis. Will the crews of the racing Airships survive the mysteries of the deep to make it back to London? We won’t know who won the race until Closing Ceremonies . . .

As much as possible the flavor and style of the weekend’s programming will reflect the geographical location, so should you choose to pick costuming that reflects a particular culture, you may wish to time your outfit accordingly 🙂

  • Hello Aloysius Fox,

I signed up to come to your event and have now checked out the list of events (?) but I am in the dark as far as what the event listings mean. I understand the hint for costumes to go with the specific locale, but I am not visualizing how these trip listings come to life at a convention.

    • The theme is a rather loose one, and one should definitely not feel pressured by it. Some performances and panels have been timed to fit the theme of the current country setting, but generally speaking the Symposium is a very laid back convention . . . while there is some immersion at play, this is not an immersive con.
