A Very Gatsby New Year

Dateline: Michigan, Jan 4, 2016

The Prohibition Era prevailed in Central Michigan this year (without the pesky ban on alcohol, of course).  Even the steamiest of steampunks set their goggles aside and donned their black ties and flapper dresses to ring in the New Year.

In Ann Arbor, the Woodruff’s Grove Steampunk Society and the Airship Keres hosted a tasteful invasion of Arbor Brewing Company‘s A GATSBY NEW YEAR’S EVE,  featuring musical guests, The Appleseed Collective. A special French-inspired menu and champagne by the bottle added to the elegant ambiance. Moreover, the venue was so delighted to be invaded that the steampunk table was placed front an center, so we could be seen by one and all.

dance In Lansing, Capitol Steam invaded GATSBY NEW YEAR’S EVE BASH “The Grandest Party in Lansing” which was hosted by Lil’ Darlins Vaudeville at The Loft. The event was an evening of glitz and glamour, spectacle and surprises including a live 1920’s jazz band, hors d’oeuvre buffet, champagne toast at midnight, Charleston lessons, photo booth, and complimentary party favors and noisemakers.

Several contests were run, and Capitol Steam members swept every category. Congratulations go out to Alex Verhaeghe and Emily Matticks (right) for winning the swing dance competition, to Paul Ruszkowski (left) who won the costume contest and to David VanderMolen, who offered the best New Years Resolution.

This reporter looks forward to the upcoming events of both Woodruff’s Grove and Capitol Steam, both coming very soon.

Submitted by Cindy Spencer Pape, Communications Officer for Capitol Steam, aka Rosabel Rook, Propagandaumm-Communications Officer for the Airship Keres. (As my time machine was malfunctioning, the Lansing event was covered by Jason Heinrich, founding member of Capitol Steam.)
