The Fairy Courts of the Midsummer Masquerade

The atmosphere of the Cincinnati Midsummer Masquerade has always had the magical feeling of fairy folk, and given the July climate, wispy attire is certainly more comfortable . . . not to mention tantalizing! So this year with our new home at the Moonlite Gardens at Coney Island, we are fully embracing our inspiration from Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the addition of the Fairy Courts of the King and Queen of the Fairies, Oberon and Titania . . . and Bottom!

Titania and Bottom

Since the masquerade’s first year back in July 2010, we have hosted a costume contest for best dressed man, best dressed woman, and best dressed group, but this year we are taking a whole new approach to the costume contests.

Oberon TitaniaThis year there will be a royal fairy court of three people who are honored guests at the Cincinnati Masquerade, three great costumers who have been honored in past masquerades and have won past costume contests. The king of the fairies will have the Court of Oberon, the queen shall have the Court of Titania, and the most humorous costume will have the Ears of Bottom!

As many of you will recall, Oberon and Titania are constantly fighting, so it is not a surprise to learn that their courts are on opposing sides of the masquerade, but hopefully harmony can be achieved before the stoke of midnight as successors to the thrones are chosen, voted on by the audience, the King, the Queen, and the Bottom.

The prize for being the best dressed man or woman at the Cincinnati Midsummer Masquerade is the opportunity to be the King or Queen of next year’s masquerade, and the funniest costume wins the honor of being Bottom for next year. Each of these winners get free tickets to next year’s Midsummer Masquerade and will be honored as fairy folk royalty.
