Starbase Indy and Steam Trek

Starbase Indy

This weekend saw the 19th Starbase Indy in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a few members of The Pandora Society were there to venture into the “final frontier” and enjoy the dorky fun. Starbase Indy started in 1995 when Star Trek dominated the airwaves with The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, AND Voyager episodes all being produced in tandem. There were Star Trek conventions popping up all over the country, but slowly over time many faded like the warp signature of a cloaked Romulan ship, but not Starbase Indy.

Grodenchick and Eisenberg give con performances in costume.

The modest sized fan run convention brings a few hundred people each year, but there is a sincere love of the Star Trek franchise that brings a lot of soul to this convention, and a dedicated con staff who bring a lot of media guests (as illustrated above). While the main focus for picking media guests is Star Trek with Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys), Max Grodenchick (Rom), and Aron Eisenberg (Nog), other shows such as Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Atlantis were represented by actors Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh), Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett), and David Nykl (Radek Zelenka). All the guests were very friendly with the fans, but it was definitely Grodenchick and Eisenberg who stole the show with their mixture improv and comedy as they weaved in and out of their former father and son characters from Deep Space Nine.

But as stated in previous articles in this Steam Trek series, my main mission at Starbase Indy was to find Star Trek outfits that had been “steampunked” and I was not disappointed.
