RVA Steampunk Salon – July 2016

RSS_colors_smallFor July of 2016 the Richmond Steampunk Society left it’s original Salon venue for a new venue in the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood of Richmond, VA. Station 2 is 19th century fire house that has been remodeled on the inside and turned into a bar and restaurant. On the outside it still maintains it’s historical architecture, though the buildings to the right and left are right out of a 1970s and 80s vision of the future. The primary focus of the menu is burgers, from simple all the way to so complicated you can’t eat it without a knife and fork.

We had a small turnout of nine, including my wife’s parents, who were visiting from out of town. I really wish I could get more of the people in the area who I KNOW are interested in Steampunk to come out to our events. I think perhaps the Steampunks in this area just see it as it’s original meaning of a fiction genre, and not as the social creature I’ve come to know it as. I’ll keep trying though. Keep reading below the photo about our visit to the Poe museum.

Station 2 is just a block up the street from Richmond’s “Poe Museum“. Edgar Allen Poe was from Richmond and while the Poe museum isn’t actually his house, it has a lot of artifacts from his house and a lot of information about his life. Several of the Richmond Steampunk Society visited the museum before attending the Salon. The museum is built inside of three different small houses from the era, all surrounding a nice courtyard with two black cats named Pluto and Edgar stalking around. As much as I tried to get gloomy in the presence of all the Poe artifacts, I just couldn’t do it. Especially with the nice cats lounging around. If you are a fan of Poe, when you are in Richmond the museum is worth a visit.

Next month we are hoping to have the Salon as a tea time at a local tea shop. We also have plans to have a mid month picnic with New Zealand pies for the main course. You can find our group on facebook, just search for Richmond Steampunk Society
