International Steampunk Symposium – Bocce Ball Tournament!

The tournament is underway!

The International Symposium Games got off to a rolling start yesterday with the Bocce Ball tournament between eleven competing airships. This journalist must ashamedly admit that prior to yesterday his knowledge of the game mechanics was pitifully lacking, but thankfully several kindly observers and participants took time out to explain the rules. I also had the opportunity to chat with the movers and shakers in the Symposium Bocce Ball tournament as to how the games played out.

Ready the teams!

Ready the teams!

For those that don’t know how Bocce Ball is played (I was one of them before yesterday) the game involves two competing teams attempting to place their bocce balls as close as possible to the pallino (sometimes know as the jack) by rolling them underarm from opposite sides of the court. Points are scored by the teams who both get their bocce balls closest to the pallino. Polite ribbing and mild insults across the court are permitted, and as long as animosity doesn’t descend into outright dueling (we saved that for Saturday’s umbrella fencing).

Gamesmaster Tony presides over a close call

Representatives of the eleven teams participated in what was termed by presiding Gamesmaster Captain Tony as ‘very close games’. In a brief interview, Captain Tony spoke highly of every team, and said that all those who participated had a ‘great deal of fun’ and displayed ‘excellent sportsmanship’. Eye-witnesses spoke of the proceedings only being marginally disrupted by the adorable ship cat of the Archon who decided to assist by playing with the bocce balls midway through the match. Nice move Archon…

Only one team can be on top however, and this years victors were the Dodge City Airship crew with a phenomenally close placement of the bocce ball a scant two inches from the pallino in the last round, with the Dastardly Alliance taking an extremely close second place. A member of the Dastardly Alliance who wishes to remain anonymous was quoted as saying ‘well played Dodge City. See you next year…’.

Complimentary – or vaguely sinister? I guess we’ll see at the next International Steampunk Symposium Bocce Ball games…
