If Lando Calrissian had a Music Career.

British singer Billy Ocean had several hit songs in the 1970s and 80s, perhaps his most well known being “Caribbean Queen,” but in February 1985 he took a trip to a “galaxy far, far away” with the music video to “Loverboy.” The song itself has nothing quintessentially science fiction about it with typical “boy meets girl” lyrics, “I wanna be your loverboy,” however, the music video has a definite Star Wars inspiration.

Billy Ocean Loverboy

The music video was shot at Durdle Door in Dorset, England and features a rider on horseback riding up the coast to a bar built inside a cave, reminiscent of the cantina scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, interspersed with scenes of Billy popping out of what seems to be the phantom zone from Superman II to sing the song.

Billy Ocean’s outfit is typical of New Romantic fashions that were popular in the early 1980s with their futuristic designs, and his is particularly reminiscent of Lando Calrission at the end of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Despite the supposed romantic lyrics of the song, the video is disturbing in its presentation of a “love” story. The protagonist alien is also the antagonist, and we are not privilege to whatever back story may or may have not been there, so essentially the narrative appears to be a lustful drunken murder and abduction. That being said, the chorus of quasi-Jawas was fun.

Look out for more classic “sci-fi” music videos from the 20th century next week as I dredge up the dorky rock of the past.
