Chicago Steampunk Salon – December 2015 Report

This week’s report is brought to you by two of the Windy City Steam Collective’s co-conspirators Miss Vivienne Merriweather and Dr. J.D. Pembroke. You might know them from such places as the Salon and various Speakeasies around Chicago.

Chicago has a monthly Steampunk salon! Run by the Windy City Steam Collective, it brings the Chicagoland Steampunk community together for a fun and relaxed evening on the second Wednesday of every month at the renowned and beloved punk bar Delilah’s.

Delilah’s once again opened its doors wide and welcome to the Chicago Steampunk community for a night of fun, frivolity, cookies, and bourbon (of course there’s bourbon. There’s always bourbon). Attendance at this month’s salon was boosted by the rather attractive members of the Milwaukee Steampunk Society who had the chance to enjoy some famed Chicago hospitality.

Dec salon - all 680As if fine company and booze weren’t enough, Windy City Steam Collective’s (WCSC) very own Reverend Jim Best brought in the Yuletide spirit with oodles of delicious cookies and snacks, as a precursor to the usual visit from the illustrious Red Cooler Tamale Guy. Additionally, Chelsie, our very own talented bartender and resident gin-scholar provided us with this month’s custom cocktail – The Dead Hummingbird, the recipe for which is provided below for your drinking pleasure…

One of our favorite roles of the Salon is helping to promote the many local Steampunk and otherwise geeky events, and this month we were lucky to have some guest announcers.

Dec salon - matty 680Deb Miller of Terra Mysterium‘s theater troupe discussed the then upcoming production ‘A Midwinter Mummers Play’, an original adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’ (which we can report was wonderful). Bridget Sharon spoke about the Milwaukee Steampunk Society Holiday Ball (which was also tons of fun). Announced was also the regularly occurring architectural tours of the Glessner and Clarke houses located in the Historic Prairie Avenue district of Chicago’s south loop, as well as the Chicago GeekBar Tea Party, hosted by veteran Steampunk Smilin’ Joe Mason.

Dec salon - cray crayWe’re happy to announce that this month’s attendance reached capacity for Delilah’s, a first for the Salon! As the event continues to grow, we’re always looking for new and exciting ideas – message us on our WCSC Facebook page if you’re interested in hosting an event or if you’d like to see different types of programming. Steampunk is about community, and without the support of the wonderful patrons of our humble salon, it wouldn’t be the success that it is.

Happy Holidays to all, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the January Chicago Steampunk Salon!
