Ladies and Gentlemen . . . we present to you our latest contestant for the Firehouse Moustache Wax Beard & Moustache Contest . . . Zebulon Vitruvius Pike of Turtle Creek, PA.

Zebulon Vitruvius Pike

It was at the first Steampunk World’s Fair in 2010, my first convention dedicated specifically to steampunk. There, I noticed a plethora of fine beards. My own beard, while somewhat unique, did not seem to measure up. During the con, though, I took to twirling my mustache a bit, drawing it out horizontally like the more traditional handlebar rather than allowing it to blend in with the rest of the beard.

Zebulon Vitruvius Pike 2Immediately, my previously mundane beard began to get the attention of the assembled and I was inspired to enter the beard and mustache contest, earning second place. (The judge could not decide so we ended up settling the issue with rock-paper-scissors.)

I have since developed a convention presentation on the history of the 19th century beard movement, joined local and national beard and mustache organizations and have won third in my class at a regional competition. I have also evolved from using nothing, to hairspray, to wax (which I still use for daily grooming) and finally to glue for the maximum hold.
